Edgar Yanez
Artist
Edgar is a multifaceted Venezuelan Canadian artist, based in London since 2010, when he came with his family to pursue doctoral studies at Western University. Originally an architect, during his years of study he joined the choirs of the Faculty of Architecture and the Central University of Venezuela. Edgar has also explored the world of visual arts and music with equal passion for decades. His interest in Latin music led him to study the culture and language of Brazil in depth, and to train in Brazilian percussion with renowned musicians at the Brazilian Embassy in Venezuela. There he contacted other musicians and formed the “Badaué” band of Afro-Brazilian music, performing in public venues such as the Ateneo of Caracas, the Brazil-Venezuela Cultural Institute, in public and private events, and even on TV shows in Caracas. Upon his arrival in Canada, he taught Portuguese at Western University for several years, and Spanish from 2010 to the present. In London, he auditioned and joined the “Broadway Singers” choir, and strengthened his vocal coaching process to develop his singing skills in musical theater, opera, jazz, and other genres. Edgar has performed at different public and private events in London, and he has recently collaborated as a vocalist or percussionist with other London musicians.
Edgar is interested in introducing important Latin American classics and composers who are little known in North America, especially by the younger generations. He has a particular interest in highlighting the music of Heitor Villalobos, Nana Vasconcelos, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Joao Bosco, Milton Nascimento, among others, who have managed to draw complex fusion maps of musical genres as diverse as academic music, jazz, some African rhythms, and popular music generated from these convergences.
